Test equipment

Spectroil M RDE Atomic Emission Spectroscopy Analyzer

Sample size

20ml (recommended), 10ml (minimum)

Standard

ASTM D6595

Unit

PPM (parts per million)

Test methodology

Rotating Disk Electrode - Atomic Emission Spectroscopy Analyzer (RDE-AES) vaporizes and excites the atoms in the oil sample using a high voltage discharge between a rotating carbon disc and an electrode. Not wanting to remain in the excited state, the excited atoms then releases energy in the form of light. The instrument detects the light produced at various frequencies and intensities, and determine type of elements present and their corresponding concentrations.

Notes (application)

The AES is able to determine reliably and reproducibly up to 21 wear metals, contaminations and additives.

The elements in ppm include:

Iron, Chromium, Tin, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Aluminium, Molybdenum, Silicon, Sodium, Potassium, Boron, Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Barium, Boron, Silver, Vanadium, Titanium

A limitation of RDE-AES is that particle larger than 8 μm will not be able to be vaporized and well detected. Thus, for wear monitoring, it is useful to complement this test with other methods such as DR Ferrography, PQ etc.

Suitable for systems

All lubricating systems. Also suitable for Grease.
